Introduction to Oncology Massage – 14 CE hours
by the Center for the Advancement of Therapeutic Arts

This class, the core prerequisite for individual classes/certification in the Oncology Massage Training & Certification Program, is designed to educate licensed massage therapists in the safe practices of Oncology Massage. Students will develop a keen appreciation and understanding of the latest concepts in cancer biology and cancer therapeutics.

Taught by a massage therapist and nurse with extensive experience in oncology care settings, this course will provide students with an understanding of:

  • How specific cellular processes are altered during cancer initiation and progression
  • How cancer is defined and classified
  • Understanding cancer risk factors; cancer screenings
  • Cancer treatments, side effects and treatment related symptoms
  • Palliative care
  • and more..

The hands-on portion of the class is designed to give practitioners strategies for safe and effective ways to bolster, drape and position clients, as well as touch pressures to consider.

Assessment and Application of Oncology Massage – 8 CE hours by the Center for the Advancement of Therapeutic Arts

This course is designed as a focused practicum to help students assimilate and apply the material from the foundational courses in the oncology massage program: Introduction to Oncology Massage, Safe Massage for Oncology Patients with Lymphedema and Pharmacological Considerations for Oncology Massage. Alternate bolstering and draping will be practiced in depth. Hands-on time will also include practice of modifying standard massage techniques and pressure required for safe yet effective massage for the oncology population. Case studies presented will hone students’ critical thinking skills, especially as related to formulation of treatment plans, adaptations to intake protocols, and communication with the client’s medical team.

About Ericka Clinton, LMT

Ericka Clinton is a NY State Licensed Massage Therapist since 1998.  She has been a faculty member and administrator at the Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences in New York City since 2001. She currently serves as the Dean for the Massage Therapy Program. She teaches practical classes in both Western and Eastern modalities and supervises clinical internships.

Ericka maintains a private practice as a massage therapist and has worked as a massage therapist for NY Presbyterian Medical Center’s Integrative Medicine Program and most recently at the Bendheim Integrative Medicine Center run by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.  She also creates and teaches continuing education courses for massage therapists in the US, Jamaica and most recently Mexico.

Ericka earned her Massage Therapy Diploma from the Swedish Institute, and has continued studying various forms of structural and myofascial work. She earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Human Development with a focus in Kinesthetic Neuroscience from Empire State College in 2015. She has participated in research projects related to massage therapy as a principal investigator and interviewer.  Ericka has also appeared twice on the Martha Stewart Living Radio program and contributed to various articles on massage therapy.
